James Turrell is an American artist from Southern California that is known for his work within the Light and Space movement. Some of his popular works include Breathing Light which is available for visits at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Aten Reign in New York, and Twilight Epiphany in Texas. The Light and Space Movement was a popular movement in the mid 1960’s that focused on perception, and presence. The materials used during this art movement were light and space, together they were used to create an immersive art experience where the presence of light gave a physical feeling, almost an entity in the room.
James was raised as a quaker in which we find that many of his works relate to quaker meetings where people gather in silent prayer in hope to hear what god has to say. Turrell’s work is immersive, it has no image, no object, and it has very little places of focus, without all of that the only thing left is yourself in this silent empty space where the light is intended to create this contemplative or meditative atmosphere. The idea of his artwork is to allow yourself to be immersed into the light and allow yourself to feel the light.

REFLECTION
This first project was honestly a lot of fun! I like to make/edit videos for fun on my personal time so creating something sort of like a documentary was really intriguing for me. It is surprising though how long it can take to create a short clip such as my video which is roughly 1 minute and 30 seconds. What I have learned is that to make a successful video you need a lot of components to work together. Such as visual transition but also audio sounds. I think having us create this podcast was a great project because I see this as a project that I would also love to assign in my future classroom.
